Stress equation based scaling framework for adverse pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers

چکیده
This paper provides a framework for estimating appropriate turbulent velocity scales in adverse pressure gradient boundary layers (APG TBLs) via study of the mean stress balance. We examine APG TBLs using relationship between Reynolds shear and stress. It is reasoned that as distance from wall increases scaling transitions one dominated by wall-shear-stress scale, uτ, to A uhyb, proposed varies with combines pressure-stress-based velocity. investigation uses new high number (7000≲Reτ≲7800) experimental measurements, existing lower (600≲Reτ≲2000) computational (Reτ<700) data sets. The scale realizes similarity profiles degree superior achievable any wall-distance-independent when considering full extent flow domain.

Constant adverse pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers
Significant progress has been made towards understanding the large scale features of wall-bounded shear flow in zero pressure gradient (ZPG) turbulent boundary layers (TBL). Here we consider their effects in adverse pressure gradient (APG) flows where the pressure gradient parameter is held constant and Reynolds number is varied. This is done by documenting the changes in the mean velocity, str...
متن کاملA parametric study of adverse pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers
There are many open questions regarding the behaviour of turbulent boundary layers subjected to pressure gradients and this is confounded by the large parameter space that may affect these flows. While there have been many valuable investigations conducted within this parameter space, there are still insufficient data to attempt to reduce this parameter space. Here, we consider a parametric stu...
متن کاملCoherent structures in turbulent boundary layers with adverse pressure gradients
The coherent structures in turbulent boundary layers (TBLs) subjected to adverse pressure gradients (APGs) were investigated by analyzing a database of direct numerical simulations. The equilibrium adverse pressure gradient flows were established by using a power law free-stream distribution. The population trends of the spanwise vortices show that the outer regions of the APG TBLs are densely ...
متن کاملEvolution of zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers
The streamwise evolution of a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) developing under constant pressure on a smooth wall is considered. The closure problem is described for the zero pressure gradient (ZPG) flow where the only assumptions made are the use of classical similarity laws, such as Prandtl’s law of the wall and Coles’[1, 2] law of the wake, together with the mean continuity and mean momentum ...
متن کاملThe Structure of Zero, Favorable and Adverse Pressure Gradient Turbulent Boundary Layers
The effects of pressure gradient on an initially zeropressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer are investigated. We consider both adverse and favourable pressure gradients at matched Reynolds number as compared with the zero pressure gradient case. The data are also acquired using matched sensor parameters so that an unambiguous comparison can be made. The results show that energy increases th...
